"In the end, this is what we had in mind, a full-time community for real people..." Andres Duany on The Town of Owl’s Head The Architecture It has been said that, “ great communities grow through harmony.” This philosophy is the cornerstone of Owl’s Head. Originally conceived through the process of a charrette attended by some of the country’s finest architects, the vision was ultimately fulfilled in the design of Summerour & Associates, a globally-recognized firm based in Atlanta, Georgia, who believes great architecture is the result of a collaborative effort. One that is innovative, yet respectful of the timeless standards of quality, scale, proportion and detail. This belief has formed the basis of Summerour’s distinctive style over the past fifteen years. The architectural design of Owl’s Head exemplifies the same ideas and values behind the original theme of this town—as a place of distinction based on the sum of its parts, each of which would not have the same meaning when considered alone. Designing homes that evoke “a welcoming feeling,” while creating streetscapes that allow for visual diversity, Summerour embraces elements such as side porches and outdoor fireplaces as distinctive to Owl’s Head. Designed to bring the inside out and the outside in, the homes of Owl’s Head are created with respect to one another and with the end in mind. Summerour’s selection of materials also serves that. For instance, the natural wood shingled roofs pay homage to pre-industrialized America, an era defined by fine hand-craftsmanship. And, with his designing eye on the entire streetscape, not merely the individual structures, Summerour saw wood roofs as blending naturally while being true to Owl’s Head’s small town scale. Much like a symphony joins individual instruments into a cohesive melody, Owl’s Head is the creation of an environment that allows materials, landscapes and emotions to coexist, the end result of which, is the harmony of a great community. The Amenities The choice is yours. A round of golf at the 18-hole Arnold Palmer Signature Course, a refreshing swim in one of the quaint community pools or simply a walk through town for a cup of coffee. And the choices go on and on. Come experience the rewards of community living in The Town of Owl’s Head. The Place Located on 1,600 acres just 25 minutes north of the Beaches of South Walton, the balmy climes and cool breezes characterized by Florida’s coastal inland heights, sets The Town of Owl’s Head distinctly apart from its neighbors. While white sand lakes filled with crystal blue water serve as a reminder to the close proximity of the coast, varied and rolling hills characteristic of a higher elevation, give way to magnificent STEEPHEADS, providing vistas you simply will not find anywhere else. The Course The Arnold Palmer Signature course at Owl’s Head will be one of the most distinctive golf courses in Florida, capitalizing on two very different landscapes across the area’s surprising topography. Playing along with the community-minded traditional neighborhood development ethic, the course will also conform to a “core course” design, with fairways adjacent to fairways, rather than backyards. With few exceptions, homes will not be visible from the golf course. It is a course that goes with the flow of the land, routed and designed by Palmer Course Design to take advantage of every natural feature. The front nine will play through a series of dunes covered with wispy grasses, native trees and dramatic blow-out bunkers. With that part of the course sited on an exposed knoll, ocean breezes will often come into play. The back nine will ascend into heavily wooded hills and play across deep wetland steepheads. A number of holes on the homeward nine will offer distant and dramatic vistas of the surrounding nature preserve. The course will be adorned with several blue-water lakes. Water will come into play on as many as five holes. Close green-to-tee relationships will help create a very walkable course. To promote short game creativity, the course will offer small, subtle greens, surrounded by huge mow-out areas. Fairways will be framed against a native plant pallet of scrub oaks, wax myrtles, cedars, pine, and yaupon holly. Bunkers will appear almost an art form – rugged, natural and beautiful. Owl’s Head will provide extensive practice areas: a three-acre, short-game complex with an 18-hole putting course and a first-class driving range that will allow golfers to practice the same type of shots they will find on the course. Construction on the course is slated to start in March, 2006, with play expected to begin in the spring of 2007. Owl's Head will be a private club but will be open to public play until the membership matures. Founded on the philosophy and standards of excellence set forth by the game’s ambassador, Palmer Course Design has created some of golf’s most memorable and awe-inspiring courses throughout the world. With nearly 300 active projects and open golf courses in 38 states and 23 countries, Palmer Course Design applies fundamental design elements to any style of course and is committed to providing a great golf experience as the company continues to develop its exciting new designs.
